Media Studies Degree Clarifications
Most urgently, it has come to our attention that DegreeWorks is not displaying the revised updates to the major and minor correctly—namely it is still listing MEDST 200 as a core class. We are working to resolve this, but in the meantime, to clarify:
For NEW Media Studies majors and minors, MEDST 200 is NOT a required class. Students who recently declared will instead choose from several hands-on creative media courses (see the attached handout). You can still count that course toward your electives.
For Media Studies majors/minors who declared before July 2022: if you have taken MEDST 200 already, you are all set—this course still counts for you. If you have NOT taken MEDST 200 yet, you can either opt-in to the new requirements OR stay with the previous requirements. MEDST 200 will still be offered once per year.
For Film Studies majors and minors: MEDST 200 is STILL a required course for the degree. The course has been adapted to have a stronger Film Studies focus.
Also, FYI: 201W used to be called 300W. If you see 300W listed as a pre-req, the department can override this for you if you have taken 201W.
Checklists for Media Studies majors/minors are attached.
We will be holding a Media Studies Department Q&A meeting on Friday, November 11th at 11AM via Zoom to answer any questions you might have about the program:
